Create Pointers to Files or Folders in Google Drive with Shortcuts

The shortcuts in Google Drive allows all users to create pointers to files from the same drive or any other drive. This feature in Google Drive works just like Windows Shortcuts i.e. they are pointers to a file stored in another location. The shortcuts made can be stored in any location without impacting the location of the original file.

Why Should One Use It:

This feature allows users to create shortcuts in the drive, making it easy to organize files and folders outside of a given shared drive.  Shortcuts will help users to organize their files without even creating multiple copies and it will also reduce their effort to maintain them.

Updates:

From 30 September 2020, it won't be possible to upload a file in multiple locations in My Drive. Every file will stay in a single location. All files living in multiple locations will automatically be migrated to shortcuts. No admin or end-user action is required to carry out the process.

Shortcuts, Visibility, and Sharing Options:

Shortcuts will be visible to everyone who has access to the folder or the drive containing the shortcut. Even if you can see all the shortcuts, you can only open it if you have appropriate access to the original document or the folder.

Backup and Sync:

This feature is already available for all Google users and requires an app version of 3.46 and above.

Availability:

Everyone with a Google account will be able to use it.
