Google Cloud Directory Sync(GCDS)

GCDS is a vital tool which is useful for the organizations migrating their Data server especially email server from legacy platform to Google.

Google Cloud Directory Sync(GCDS)

GCDS (Google Cloud Directory Sync) earlier known as GADS (Google Active Directory Sync) is basically a tool that helps organizations to sync directory data to the cloud. It is a boon to those organizations who have been thinking of how to move their IT infrastructure to cloud. G Suite (Google’s Cloud productivity platform ) has provided the major solution for this.

The data of any organization stored on the LDAP server or the Microsoft Active Directory is synchronized in the Google domain with the help of GCDS. The tool needs to be installed in the same network as the Active Directory.

The synchronization process does not modify the data stored on the LDAP server i.e one-way-sync is done.

HOW IT WORKS :

Data is exported in the form of a list from the LDAP server. The rules for the formation of the list is set by the customer itself. Afterward, GCDS connects to the Google domain and generates Google users, groups, and shared contacts. And then a comparison is done between the format of the data stored in the LDAP server and the format specified by the customer to update the Google domain.

After the completion of the synchronization, a mail confirmation is sent to the specified address for the acknowledgement.

BENEFITS:

  1. One - way -sync features doesn’t alters the LDAP server data.

  2. It runs as a utility in the server environment and does not provide access to LDAP server from outside.

  3. Allows to configure rules for custom mapping of the users, non-users, groups, calendar resources, aliases.

  4. Includes data security.

  5. Includes extra tests to ensure correct synchronization.

  6. No permission is there to access your LDAP directory server data and thus acting as a utility.

  7. GCDS tool helps you to easily keep tracks of users and groups.
