For a G Suite user, domain swapping is the most convenient way to change the primary domain with the new domain.

If you do not want to use your current domain as the primary one or wish to change the domain name through which your users send and receive email. You can change your primary domain from the Admin console of the Google Account.

 

This is can be done by two methods : -

  1. Adding your desired domain name and then swapping it with the older one. (Domain Swapping).

  2. Creating domain alias for the primary domain.

 

NOTE: This is not possible with the legacy-free Edition i.e the Google Standard Edition and the trial accounts.

 

But before we get into this let us see how a domain is made primary.

When we sign up for G Suite, we provide a domain name that gets associated with the Google account and is considered as the primary domain.

 

Now let us see what are steps to be done for the domain swapping.

 

1. Adding the secondary domain and set up the MX records.

 

a. Sign in to the admin console with the credentials and go to the Domain section, click on add domain

 

 

b. Add the domain as the new domain, not as the domain alias

 

c. Verify the domain and set the MX records of the domain to the Google server

 

2. Making the new one Primary.

            

a. After creating the new domain, next to it click on Make Primary

 

b. Click on Change Primary Domain



3. Renaming Users Email Address.

 

a. Go to the admin console home page and click on Users

 

b. Click on a user and on the left click on Rename

 

 

c. Click on the drop-down menu of the Primary Email to select the primary domain

 

d. Click on Rename

 

4. Renaming Groups Email Address.

    

a. Go to Admin Console home page and click on Groups

 

b. Click on a Group to open its Group’s page in order to rename it

      

c. Click on Change Group’s Info

 

 

d. Change the primary domain from the drop-down menu of Group Email

 

e. Click on Save Group Info

 

5. Remove the old Domain ( Optional).

 

If you want to remove the Old domain in case it is not renewed, or you don't want to use it further you can remove it.

 

a. Go to the Admin Console Home page and go to the Domains Section

 

b.  Click on add/ Remove domains

 

c. To the next to your old domain select on Deactivate

 

d. Confirm it and remove
